Magic Carpets: A solo exhibition by Ghoul Guy

This October, artist Ghoul Guy unveils Magic Carpets — the eighth collection in a ten-year project to create one thousand original artworks. The show features 50 hand-tufted rugs that are as much about feel as they are form.
Each piece is rich with texture and colour, crafted entirely by hand in the artist’s studio using over 40 kilometres of acrylic yarn, sourced from Miyoshi Rug Co. in Tokushima. The backs are lined with felt, then stencilled, signed, and numbered by the artist. Designed for versatility, the rugs feature a hanging mechanism for wall display, but can also be used as functional art underfoot.
“Carpet making is currently being embraced by indie artists as an exciting new medium,” says Ghoul Guy. “We’ve taken an industrialised craft that’s thousands of years old, hacking together the tools and reinterpreting the process to work in our homes and studios. The chaotic energy of this DIY movement—and its experimental reimagining of an ancient form—was the inspiration behind Magic Carpets.”
The exhibition takes place at Yoyogi Art Gallery, a glass-fronted corner space tucked just beyond the bustle of Harajuku’s Takeshita Street. Step away from the chaos of street vendors and neon signage, and you’ll find a pocket of calm — an ideal setting for this tactile, transportive show.
“I’ll be at the gallery for the duration of the exhibition,” the artist says. “It’s one of the nicest times of year in Tokyo. The summer heat will be easing off, and the first hints of autumn make it the perfect season to get out and experience this unusual collection.”
